Contrary to popular belief, the Labrador Retriever did not originate in Labrador, but is native to Newfoundland from where it was introduced to England in the early 1800s.  This is a truly versatile dog and serves in so many capacities worldwide.  It has proven itself as a gundog, companion, protector, guide dog to the blind, police dog and as a tracking/drug locator.  This in addition to its stable temperament and equable nature has made this one of the most popular dogs of all time.  The unfortunate downside to this of course is that this results in 'backyard' or commercial breeders churning out dogs of questionable quality that may not have all the good qualities of this breed.  It is imperative to buy from a reputable breeder especially when dealing with a popular breed such as the Labrador.
